Geography & Map

  • Location: Muriyad Grama Panchayat is located in the Irinjalakuda Block of Mukundapuram Taluk in Thrissur District.

  • Area and Villages: Spanning across the villages of Pullur, Muriyad, and Anandapuram, the panchayat covers an area of 58 square kilometers.

  • Geographical Divisions: Muriyad Panchayat is composed of two geographically distinct regions:

    1. Anandapuram-Muriyad region (Wards 1 to 5)

    2. Pullur-Oorakam region (Wards 6 to 10)

  • Terrain: The landscape features the vast shores of the Muriyad Lake, agriculturally viable sloped terrains, and a fertile topography where coconut trees thrive in abundance.

Boundaries of the Panchayat

  • West: Irinjalakuda Municipality

  • East: Parappukkara, Kodakara, and Aloor Panchayats

  • North: Parappukkara Panchayat

  • South: Aloor and Velookkara Panchayats

History and Administration

  • History: Muriyad Grama Panchayat was one of the early panchayats formed in the Mukundapuram Taluk of the erstwhile Thrissivaperur (Thrissur) District under the Kingdom of Cochin. The Muriyad Lake, located here, is noted in historical records as having been one of the major granaries ("nellara") of the old Kingdom of Cochin.

  • Administrative Growth: At the time of its inception, the panchayat consisted of only 5 wards. Following the delimitation/reorganization of villages in Kerala in 1962, the number of wards increased to 9. Currently, based on population, the panchayat stands with 18 wards.

  • First President: Thaliyan Lonappan was the first president of the panchayat.

Demographics and Livelihood

  • Ninety percent of the local population consists of small-scale farmers, agricultural laborers, and artisans, making it a community closely tied to traditional and agrarian livelihoods.
