A Panchayat is a group of elected representatives who work for the development and welfare of the people. A Grama Panchayat carries out the decisions of the Gram Sabha and looks after the day-to-day needs of the local community.Main Parts of a PanchayatPresident:The head of the Panchayat. The President leads the meetings and oversees the overall work of the Panchayat.Vice President:Helps the President and takes charge when the President is not available.Ward Members:People’s representatives elected from each ward of the Panchayat. They raise the needs and concerns of the people in their wards.Standing Committees:These committees help the Panchayat manage different areas of work, such as Finance, Development, Welfare, Health and Education.

History of Grama Panchayat

Muriyad Grama Panchayat is one of the panchayats formed in Mukundapuram Taluk of Thrissur District, which was part of the erstwhile Kingdom of Cochin. The total area of the Panchayat is 58 square kilometres, with a total population of 25,447. In 1996, the Panchayat had 10 wards, which were later increased to 18 wards. Muriyad Grama Panchayat comprises three villages: Muriyad, Anandapuram and Pullur At the time of its formation, the Panchayat had only five wards. The first President of the Panchayat was the late Shri Thaliyan Lonappan. During the village reorganisation in Kerala in 1962, the number of wards was increased to nine. Later, based on population, it was increased to ten wards, and today the Panchayat has 18 wards.
